In today’s competitive job market, a CV is more than just a document, it is your first impression and often your only chance to stand out. Yet, many candidates underestimate the importance of a well-structured and professional CV.
As part of our ongoing research into hiring trends and candidate screening, we identified the most common CV mistakes that cause strong profiles to be overlooked.
Recruiters spend 6–10 seconds scanning a CV. If your CV is messy or unclear, it will not be read.
Common issues:
No clear headings
Large blocks of text
No bullet points
No consistent format
Tip: Keep it clean, organized, and easy to read.
One generic CV for every job = big mistake.
Recruiters easily spot a CV that was sent to 100 companies.
Companies want candidates who show interest and understanding of the role.
Tip: Align your summary, skills, and achievements with the job description.
Adding unrelated jobs or unnecessary personal details dilutes your value.
Avoid:
Jobs with no relevance
Excessive personal info
Every course you ever took
Focus on what matters to the employer.
Writing duties only is outdated. Recruiters want results.
Instead of writing: "Responsible for sales"
Write: "Increased monthly sales by 32% through client retention strategies"
Numbers attract attention and prove your impact.
A CV full of errors reflects poor attention to detail, a major red flag.
Tip: Always proofread or use a spell-checking tool before submitting.
Visual CVs look good but can break in ATS systems and may distract from content.
Too many colors
Images/icons everywhere
Text boxes that ATS can't read
Tip: Keep it professional and ATS-friendly unless you're in a design field.
A strong introduction can sell you within seconds.
Yet many candidates write vague statements.
Instead of writing: “Hard-working, motivated person seeking opportunity”
Write: “Detail-oriented HR Coordinator with 2+ years’ experience in recruitment, onboarding, and ATS tools.”
It seems small, but it's a common and costly mistake.
Use:
Professional email (firstname.lastname@email.com)
Updated phone number
LinkedIn (optional but recommended)
Recruiters do not like guessing. Briefly explain career breaks.
Examples:
"Career break, completed digital marketing courses"
"Relocation period"
Honesty + clarity = professionalism.
Many companies use automated systems to screen CVs.
If your CV lacks the right keywords, it may never reach a recruiter.
Tip: Use keywords from the job posting, naturally, not stuffed.
